Pro2typer
Hi Everyone, was out at the Duck Pond in Palo Alto Ca today at 7pm. Saw this bird can not tell for sure what it is. Thought it was a Willet at first but not sure. Thanks, Bill
Trevor L.
Whimbrel. Willet wouldn’t have the curved bill, among other things.

Pro2typer
@Seanbirds @Trevor L. Thanks again for your replies. The bill was interesting. We couldn’t tell from the photo whether the beak was shortish or curved. It looked like there was possibly a break point (near the left edge) and seeing something in the background that matched the bill trajectory or if that was the actual bill continuing on and was just reflecting the light differently.
Charlie Spencer
That's not a long curved bill, and it isn't a Whimbrel.
Jim W
Brightened it a lot. Looks like a short straight bill and an object on the ground. I'm with Charlie.
Aidan B
This is definitely a Whimbrel, there is no doubt about the identification of thes bird.

And just to remind everyone what Whimbrels look like.
Avery
Disregarding the bill, what else could it be, giving the plumage and structure of the bird?
Birding Boy
Indeed undoubtedly a Whimbrel, there are just no other options left. I think the photo quality and/or glare from the birds beak is making it appear shorter than it is. lonestranger
Following the bottom line of the bill makes me think that it is a long bill, with the top line of the bill giving the illusion of a shorter or broken bill.
DLecy
Whimbrel.
Charlie Spencer
I've changed my mind about the bill. I think there's something on the curve that reflected light and caused to me think it ended at that point.
