Virginia Confirm ID's

Recommended Posts

I walked part of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia this past week and got quite a few birds.  These are the ones I'm not 100% on, any help is greatly appreciated!

American Robin's Butt/Tail?

Black and White Warbler:

Carolina Chickadee:

Tree Swallow:

Could the bottom bird possibly be a Purple Martin?  The owner of the hostel I was staying at thought it was, but I think it's another Tree Swallow...

  1. Yes, Robin. Good call.
  2. Yes, Black and White
  3. Hmm.... definitely a Chickadee, but I'd want some very specific info on your location before I tried to call it. He's too wet and scraggly to use plumage, in any case.*
  4. Those all look like Tree Swallows to me.

*Here are range maps for the two species -- in that area they'll segregate by altitude, mostly.

That's really interesting information, Thank You.  I saw him on the way down from Dragon's Tooth (near Catawba on those ebird maps).  It was probably about 2300' elevation.  But yeah I figured he'd be unidentifiable being wet and scruffy... still cute ?
