Janety
In eastern Montana in June. Medium size bird flying. Predominantly brown but had large white area on upper tail coverts when wings flying. Open farmland
Liam
White on tail reminds me of Western Meadowlark. Edited July 3, 2018 by Liam
lonesome55dove
So do you mean like the rump area? If so, two birds come to mind...Northern Flicker and Northern Harrier. ?

Flickers have a bobbing flap-glide pattern, harriers have a soaring or flapping pattern.
Janety
It just flew in front of me while I was leaving my farm. So I just remember a straight flight until it went behind a tree. I know we have flickers here, but have not seen a harrier. I am watching for it again.

Good luck in refinding it ?
