PapaDMH
Looking for confirmation/correction on two different pairs of ducks. The pair in the water -- one photo -- look like Mottled Ducks to me. Not sure about the other pair, on the shore -- two photos. American Black Duck? Hybrid? Coastal North Carolina, May 21. Thanks
Tony Leukering
I'd call those Mottled Ducks, given the strong buff internal markings on the feathers -- particularly on the male (ABDU males mostly don't sport such).
Trevor L.
There were a couple Mottled in Missouri recently that looked a lot like this. Never knew how dark Mottleds could get.
Tony Leukering
The green bill and reduced internal markings of the male in the second pair is scary, which makes the female at least a bit suspect., particularly with that extensively white tail.
blackburnian
Where were these?
PapaDMH
Coastal North Carolina, as noted in the post. The Basin Trail at Fort Fisher, to be precise.
