Nighthawk01
From the options of gulls in the area I viewed, Ring-billed looked the most similar, articulately with the black on the bill.
IvoryBillHope
Yeah I wasn't sure how prevalent Ring-billed was in Europe and I passed on that one since I didn't have access to my European guide at the time.
Nighthawk01
I used Merlin to help narrow down the options.

The gull is definitely not a ring-billed. They are rare visitors to Portugal, and the proportions are wrong. Any experienced North American birder could tell you that. This is one of the larger gulls. I’m not experienced with immatures of the European gulls, but I’m pretty sure this is Yellow-legged. The other option would be Lesser-black Backed. Date and location would help.
DLecy
Agreed. Not a Ring-billed Gull. Not a LBBG either. Look at the mantle and that blunt-tipped bill. Structure too.

Tony Leukering
Gull is certainly too dark-mantled and has a tertial crescent too large and too well-defined for Ring-billed. I don't know Yellow-legged at all, but it and Lesser Black-backed are the only good options there for a bird that looks like that.
