Carolina Wren? Corkscrew Swamp Audobon Preserve, Florida.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

My friend saw this wee bird yesterday afternoon while birding in Corkscrew Swamp Audobon Preserve, Florida. We think it may be a young Carolina Wren or a young thrasher? Any ideas?

Why not a wet/worn adult?

I have wet and / or worn adults hopping across my deck regularly.  Even under those conditions, the markings visible on the primaries here are noticeable across the body, like this young'un:

Speaking of primaries, this bird appears to be short several, leading my to think it hasn't grown all it's flight feathers yet.  It definitely does not yet have the full-length adult tail.  For comparison, try these little fuzzballs:

I disagree on two aspects. Wrens have very rounded wings, which means that the outer pp are shorter than the middle pp, and that means that they're hidden on the folded or mostly folded wing. Additionally, all of the flight feathers on juvenile birds grow at the same time, at least in the vast majority of species.

I see nothing to prove that this is not a very wet adult, although it could also be a very wet juv.
