Canvasback or Redhead?

Recommended Posts

October 22, 2020. Quivira NWR, KS.

These ducks are confusing me. They seem to have a Canvasback-like body structure (especially the bill), but they also have very contrasting wing coverts vs. flight feathers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Female type Redheads. As you mentioned the contrast between the coverts and primaries is a good Redhead mark, and the bills look fine to me. I think I can even see a paler “ring”   near the bill tip as well.

You’re right. Thanks a lot!
