I guess I may be getting a new camera...

Well...this morning I went out to bird, and I had it on burst mode, the third shutter click and a loud click and that was that. It is as if I put the lens cap on, it takes black pics, and looking through the viewfinder it is black, everything else works just fine. Does anyone know what would cause that?

Now suggestions for a new camera.

Anyone have some thought about the Coopixp1000.

It's great. Possibly the best point and shoot camera there is, if you're pretty sure you want to get a P&S. Oddly I've found that using the macro setting can result In pretty sharp photos, if you have a good stationary target. Here's some photos I've taken with the p1000

@Birding Boy and @BirdNrd

How does it do up close, like your taking a photo of a bug? I had a lot of trouble with the p900 focusing with that.

How does it do when on full zoom?

I haven’t tried it close up but I imagine it does quite well.

As for the full zoom, it does really good. Here is a photo that I took of a bird at full zoom. The bird was about 150 feet away.

I highly recommend getting the P1000.

I use a Panasonic fz-80( point and shoot). It’s really cheap( the new price is around $400, and it has a great zoom range, is easy to use and takes great pictures.
all these were taken with it.

@Kevin, have you tried turning the camera off, taking the battery out, turning it back on, and pressing the shutter button a few times?  That should discharge any internal capacitors, and reset any malfunctioning doohickeys (a technical term we use in the IT trade).  Then turn it off, stick the battery back in, and try it.

I seriously considered the P1000 but that 3-pound weight scared me off.

Yes! My camera once just froze and the screen went black. I tried zooming in and out, and the lens wouldn’t move. I was going to take it to my local camera shop to ask them, but I accidentally dropped the camera, the battery Fell out and I put it back in and it worked. ?

You get used to it after a few days.

Agreed, its not bad especially if you have it on a shoulder harness so that it hangs near your waist or something, rather than around the neck, which can be a pain (Literally)

It wasn't toting it around that concerned me, it was holding it up to use it.  Sometimes I'll hold a camera to my eye for a couple of minutes, waiting for a bird to emerge from cover.  I tried that with a 3-pound dumbbell and couldn't hold it steady after a minute or so.

Thanks everyone! I am going to het the p1000, that is if I can find one...

Please us know how it works out for you. My camera is on it's last legs so I'm sure I will be in the market for another soon. That 3 pound weight sounds kind of scary though.
