Administrator
Sorry about that, the problem is a rather complex SSL issue. We fixed the same issue on the species page but the home page is harder. We will eventually get to it. There is just a lot going on right now as we move all these pieces off our old host to a new host.

aveschapinas
So, while admin is looking into whether the reaction limit can be changed, what do you all think would be a good/reasonable limit?

dvoribird
This was probably asked before - just back on right now: Is there still a wildlife forum / insect forum, etc.?

Welome back! No, not yet; but admin is planning to add back in some of the wildlife species. There's a thread where you can put in your opinion about which forums to restore; be right back with the link. And each of your edits added something to the quality of the post. I too see no real reason to cap the time limit to edit. If I make a tpyo that might be emburrassing, I'd like to be able to figs it even if I dont' get Intuit right a-weigh ? expecially sense so mini people tpye on small keyboards like sellphones those on. Look at it from the other side. Say someone replies to your post using the 'Quote' feature. Depending how much you change your original post, his or her reply could be outdated, irrelevant, or even wrong. Edits don't trigger 'Following' alerts, so the person replying to you doesn't know you've changed your content and won't know to change his to match. Speelin prublums? Proofread BEFORE you click Send. It's a lot easier to fix first than edit after, especially on those small keyboards. Just one network administrator's opinions. That's an argument for not allowing editing beyond 5 minutes, along the order of: "Get it right the first time or don't post at all!" IMHO a user-friendly forum would allow editing indefinitely, especially since users here cannot delete their comments. Say I start a thread and get distracted by a phone call, family member, dinner, etc. and I don't get back to the forum for 60 minutes later, after the edit timeout window has expired! Sorry, no edit! If someone is on a birding excursion and posts a query from the field, returning to a full-sized computer a few days later, he's out of luck. And it's not just typos, maybe there is additional info (text, images) to be posted that should appear in the first post. Consider that Facebook groups (including those for bird ID) allow unlimited edit time, so WhatBird needs to consider the features of their competition. Users gravitate to the easiest groups to use. We can't delete comments, but you can delete all the characters and leave only a single space. I've done it. it doesn't matter to me either way. I'm just listing the reasons some sites have limits. HamRHead
I definitely do not want a limit on editing a post. I am bad about typos and I like to fix them when possible. I once misspelled The Bird Nuts name! Thankfully I was able to fix it. Also I am not all that jazzed about the post automatically showing an edit. In most cases it doesn't do anything for me to know that a post has been edited. In the past, the site admin could tell what had transpired in a post and that seems good enough. 2

When you edit you have a check box at the bottom you can click on if you want to show that the post was edited, and a space where you can write the reason. I just checked and the default is that the show edit box is unchecked, so it's not automatic.

The "Edited by" message is automatic for me and there is no option to turn it off, but I don't have a problem with that. I do, however, have a problem with the links not turning underlined and blue immediately, although that probably can't be fixed. The only way to make a link work is to submit the post then edit the post and press the space bar or enter key after the URL. Have you noticed that there are "Edited by" messages on all the posts with links? Edited July 20, 2018 by The Bird Nuts

Here's a little test (and you should make these immediately): https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/baking-in-the-wild-how-to-make-bannock-bread/ Ok, it did turn blue and underlined immediately. Will submit now and see if it works. Edit: it worked! Strange that it doesn't for you??? Oh, and I'm going to click on show that it's been edited for the sake of science ?
