Share Your Best Photo of the Day

Folks: it's not OK to take other people's photos to edit and re-post. Just like we don't correct each other's spelling and grammar, we don't take it upon ourselves to decide that someone's photo needs correction. In addition, as has been emphasized before, you need to respect copyright.

Haven’t been able to get out birding as much as I like lately, so I don’t have many recent photos, but here’s a decent one of an Allen’s Hummingbird:

and an Allen’s Hummingbird nest to boot, on March 19:

and again on March 27:

And as of April 8, the nestling has fledged and the nest is empty!

Anna’s Hummingbirds and Great Horned Owls are the earliest breeders here in central California, (both year round residents), both of them can be on eggs by late December.

Allen’s Hummingbirds are one of our earliest migrants, some arriving in late January, but mostly arriving in February, breeding throughout late winter and early spring, and mostly leaving in June through August.

The main push of migrant songbirds - Black-throated Gray Warblers, MacGillivray’s Warblers, Hermit Warblers, Hammond’s Flycatchers, Cassin’s Vireos, etc, is primarily from mid-April through early May. But some species are earlier (Wilson’s Warblers, Warbling Vireos, and Pacific-slope Flycatchers start arriving in March), while some are later (Willow Flycatcher doesn’t migrate through until mid-May through early June).

I’d say the busiest “breeding season” is April through June. But keep in mind that in coastal central/northern California, the seasons are simply less strong. And as a result the breeding season is more spread out over several months. Also the songbird migrations are more spread out and less extreme overall. We have a lot more overall bird diversity in the winter than in the northeast, but spring songbird migration is much less exciting.

edit: Wow, the image quality went way down, I'd click on the image to see what it normally is like.
