Lumix are popular around here as entry-level or second cameras.  They're great for learning how aperture, shutter and ISO work together, at an affordable price (esp. used ones).  That zoom saves a lot of weight and money.

I do disagree about not doing birds in flight.  To some degree, that depends on the speed of the bird and the distance.  But yeah, it's not going to pick up a Peregrine in a stoop, or even a leisurely bird that's relatively close.

I agree with this.  You can get birds in flight but these cameras make it a real challenge.  I often try to pre focus on a fixed object about the same distance away, then continue to hold the shutter button 1/2 down and swing onto the bird.  It might find a soaring hawk on its own, but not always.  So I agree that it is possible, just tough.  If someone was looking for a camera designed to capture flying birds I would point them elsewhere.

I have gotten some usable bird flying files files with my Lumix.  This Clark's Nutcracker made the cut.

This was taken in Kruger National Park in East South Africa.  It is a Lilac Breasted Roller.  This bird is kind of a big deal in Africa.  It is the national bird of Kenya and each color represents a different tribe.  It is worth reading about.  Our guide almost drove by it.  Whoa Nellie!
