Share Your Best Photo of the Day

Message added by aveschapinas,

Folks: it's not OK to take other people's photos to edit and re-post. Just like we don't correct each other's spelling and grammar, we don't take it upon ourselves to decide that someone's photo needs correction. In addition, as has been emphasized before, you need to respect copyright.

Here's some big goofy Pelicans from a couple weeks ago.  I kept waiting for them to make more majestic or dignified poses, but alas.  Anyway, Pelicans might be my favorite type of bird.

By the way, the bird on the left has a tag on it (168).  I reported it to reportband.gov.  Are they going to tell me about the bird's history, if they can?  If not, is there anywhere else I can learn about a tagged bird?

Just an update on these big goofy pelicans from down near Phoenix.  I reported the tag number on the left one to reportband.gov and got some information.  It was tagged near Bancroft, Idaho on July 28, 2020 when it was young and couldn't fly yet.  That's ~680 miles away!  Now here it is in AZ, hanging out with other pelicans!  I think that's really cool.  Here's another picture.

I’m guessing this Black-throated Sparrow is tri lingual.  They mostly live in the southwest and Mexico so they must be fluent in Spanish.  They migrate up into the USA during breeding season every year so they must have a working knowledge of English.  I’m sure when they are alone they speak Sparrow.  I think I heard this one say the following:

Spanish:  Hola chicos, miren esto. Aquí hay un pájaro grande y grosero con un ojo de cristal que parpadea y hace clic cuando te mira.

English translation:  Hey guys, check this out.  There is a big rude bird over here with a glass eye that blinks and goes “click” when it looks at you.

Sparrow:  high pitched “tink”699980694_BlackThroatedSparrow.thumb.jpg.cfd2c9b6aa1627a1cb39203c08af6bf8.jpg

I think I like Sparrow best.

I have always thought that it is arrogant for humans to think that observing animals is "one way: I sometimes wonder what they think when they observe us?

Me too! You see them sometimes looking right at you.

I feel as if the Ospreys and Red Shouldered Hawks on my trail are always looking back and me and wondering what what the heck my camera is for. ?

I like this pic because it shows how well camouflaged those elusive Wilson's Snipes can be.  I saw him foraging, pulled over in my car and let down the window to snap a photo and he immediately flattened himself out on the bed of dead vegetation.   Had I not known he was there, I never would have seen him.  Now, if I can just get that Black Rail...
