The flash didn't fire here and everything else about the lighting is original; no exposure compensation and no photoshop.

For example, don’t make a photo look unnatural, but you can adjust exposure and contrast.

Don't know if you're aware of it but most built in flashes are only going to have an effective range of 10 to 20 feet. If the bird you are photographing is any further away then that the flash won't have any effect. You would need a stronger external flash for more distant subjects & those even have a limited range. You can get a flash extender to increase the range somewhat. Here's an example; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/427599-REG/Visual_Echoes_FX1_FX1_Better_Beamer_for.html I have one but stopped using it since I'll usually shoot multiple frames of a bird & the flash takes time to recharge so it's basically only good for a single shot at a time. 1
FlowerShooter
One advantage to taking pics at dark is although the detail suffers, the background is not distracting.

FlowerShooter
Owl tonight after 9pm in central Oklahoma. It took 1/8 sec at 2000 iso f6.3 to get this pic. Fortunately, it held very still.
