Pretty decent Downy Woodpecker and Song Sparrow. I was very lucky with the Woodpecker, I was observing some other birds when he cam to this seedpod and started eating; he did not mind me at all!

@blackburnian, how do you get so close? I have tried multiple different ways, with a 500mm lens, and can never get close enough.

For the Phoebe, I was in the car shooting out the open passenger window (from the driver’s seat). Trust me, it’s difficult to get good framing and background at 400mm. At 500, you have a bit more reach, so I would simply preach patience. Let the birds come to you.

Also note that @blackburnian’a camera is a crop-sensor camera, which means that he/she is effectively shooting at 640mm.

I can’t recommend the R7 enough. It’s an incredible camera for the price. The autofocus system, taken from the R3, is unbelievable.

How does it perform in low light situations? Mostly in terms of autofocus and ISO performance? I’m really considering getting your exact setup.

ISO can go super high to compensate for the relatively narrow aperture on the RF100-400 without huge IQ problems. I can’t say anything negative about the autofocus in any situation. If you do get the R7, I would definitely recommend getting an RF lens, as I’ve heard your Sigma 150-600 is not optimally compatible. The 100-400 is great for its price.

Had a chance to borrow an 800mm F11 lens for the weekend. I was concerned about such a narrow fixed aperture, but my R7 compensated quite nicely with its high ISO capabilities. The main problem was the lack of birds! Hopefully some more over the next couple days.

Had to go with the sigma 150-600mm contemporary! Love it too!
