Birdo9
This little bird flew in my house, in suburban Vancouver bc. Ran around a bit, banged into a few things but flew away and seemed fine. Is it a chicken? Anyone know what it is? Thanks
PaulK
I'm not an expert but that to me looks like someone's backyard chicken that escaped. Might be worth peering into the neighbours' yards to see if anyone has any. I'd suggest putting it in a shoebox with some newspaper to keep it contained for the time being. 2
Birdo9
Any chance it's a crow?
PaulK
I don't believe so as a crow that could fly would already look crowish. Where in Metro Van are you? 1
Birdo9
The middle of Richmond, like 3k from any farm area.
PaulK
Yeah, I suspect it's a backyard chicken. That said, depending where you are in the middle of Richmond it could be something that lives in the bog - I don't know what young rails etc. look like.
Pigeon
Looks small, but fully feathered. Japanese quail? 5
Birdo9
@Pigeon, @PaulK thanks for the help guys, should i try catching it if i see it again? Or just let it be? What you think?
PaulK
I'll defer to @Pigeonon this, or others who know domestic fowl, but my instinct would be to catch it and figure out if a neighbour has lost it. If you end up with it: Given how weird Richmond was about legalizing backyard chickens last year, if this is in fact a domestic bird I think there's a good chance it's not legal and going through official agencies like the BC SPCA or the city animal control wouldn't be likely to succeed in reuniting it with its owner. If you can't figure out whose bird it is, SPCA or wildlife rescue should be able to take it off your hands (likely SPCA for a domestic, but ????). But this is all all predicated on seeing it again in the first place. Hopefully it had a nice adventure and is back in its box under your neighbour's back porch. 1

Young of the larger species can be mistaken for the adult of the smaller Black Rail.
