Chipping Sparrows or something more exciting?

Recommended Posts

31 July 2021 Cleburne co. AL (north Alabama, Appalachian (Blue Ridge) chain).  Heavily-used primitive campground, public swimming/fishing lake and picnic pavilions.  We were there in the wee hours so there were only two other hikers and 1 fisherman about.

We were on a training hike, so no camera, but saw 2 chestnut-capped sparrows that stayed with one another, alternately foraging on the ground and calling from the surrounding scattered pines.  I thought at the time they were Chipping Sparrows, but the calls sounded a little different as they weren't long trills.
