sbruenjes
I saw these birds at a local nature preserve in Northern New Jersey. The seemed very reddish in flight, but these pics look like house sparrows.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quiscalus quiscula
The Chipping Sparrow gave me some Field vibes, but probably just because of the weird angle.

Some characteristics point to Chipping, others to Field.
Liam
I think it's the angle of the head. The supercilium looks well-defined and there appears to be dark on the lores. Shorter tail favors Chipping too (with the caveat being this is August...). 2

lonestranger
For what it's worth, my first impression was Field Sparrow for the first bird. While I can't articulate why, chipping sparrow just doesn't feel right. Edited August 26, 2021 by lonestranger operator error 2
Peromyscus
My gut reaction for the first bird is Field. The other two are House.

The Bird Nuts
I'm thinking the eyeline is too light brown for a Chipping and the white eyering is quite prominent. 5

Kevin
I am revising my agreement with chipping for the first bird. Field/Chipping Sparrow. 1

Quiscalus quiscula
For Field: Crown looks too bright rufous for chipping, and eyering seems bold and white. The bill also seems rather stout and pink. For Chipping: Eyeline seems rather prominent, straight, and brownish. Some Chippings, especially immatures, can have more extensive pink on the bill. Chipping is also more common. Edited August 27, 2021 by Quiscalus quiscula clarification 3

sbruenjes
Wow... unfortunately I don't have another pic.. The only things I can say is the bird had a very reddish tone in flight and chipping sparrows are sort of common at this park, Hilltop Reservation in Verona.
