fstopbirds
So today we saw this female mallard at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in NYC, but I can't tell what is going on with her primary and secondary wing feathers. It almost looks like plastic or metal shafts? Has anyone seen this before?
Quiscalus quiscula
That is really weird looking, however, it is probably because the bird is growing in new feathers. Perhaps it lost a lot feathers for some reason. Anyway, that is how it looks like when a feather grows in from the shaft, I believe. Are you from NYC?

Yourself? I'm an upstater, living in Albany area. Been down to the city a couple of times.
