The Old Whatbird.

Recommended Posts

I joined this forum about 6 moths after the crash, so I saw several links to the Wayback Machine, but none have been post in a few years, and I know we have a lot of members that probably don't even know that there was a crash.

Anyway I though I the us that were not here before the crash would enjoy looking at it, and those of you(sadly not very many of y'all left) can just remember what it was like.

I really wish we the old member that came on for a while after the crash were still here, like @akiley, @psweet, @IvoryBillHope, @birdbrain22, @guy_incognito, @Creeker@meghann....

Oh well, I'm just starting to ramble now, here's the link, I know you can't see everything but it is still fun.

Can you imagine the combined total of posts there'd be if the new and old forums could have been merged? There'd be 646 pages in the Best Photo of the Day thread alone for the new members to sift through when they joined. 😄

Yes, a lot of people seem not to have come back. I don't really remember what made me check back; after some months I was sure it was gone for good. By the way, on the old site crashes that left the site offline for days or weeks were unfortunately common. It's much more stable now.

All at the same time for me.  My wife passed away.  My website "Birds We See" was corrupted by a porno group in Mexico(never had so many "likes") but the site was gone. My thousands of posts to Whatbird were gone just like loosing friends.

I joined in 2010 when I was a baby birder. I had had cataract surgery and could see well without glasses for the first time in my life. That led to testing my eyesight - I can see that flower! I can see the leaves on the trees! Hey, what's that bird on that branch? My sister found the WhatBird site and sent me to it and everybody was very patient and kind helping me to identify my House Sparrows. For years WhatBirders were my only birding buddies!

I think I was the second member to rejoin after the new forum came back.  It was so empty!  I remember when people started asking ID questions it took a long time for them to be answered.  I think member activity now is close to how it was when I first joined in 2016...but I only really participated in the Help Me Identify a Bird forum then.  We don't need to talk about my early posts... 😆

Wow, blast to the past indeed! Thanks for sharing!!

I still keep on touch with a lot of the old members and many of us have met in person and become very close friends.

Psweet is very active on iNaturalist. He's moved his activity from here to there. Meghann just went on a birding trip to New Mexico and Colorado. She sent me dozens of birds to ID! Lol

It's nice to see many familiar members still active: BigOly, LoneStranger, Helen, BirdBrain, Grandpa577, and others.

I haven't heard from Bigfoot in years!

I'm glad to be back and active again. Good to see some new "faces" too.

Milton, a.k.a. @HamRHead texted me to let me know I had been mentioned. I feel like some old creature coming from a dusty tomb in a movie. "Who has disturbed me from my slumber???" 😂

Life's been crazy. (for context among the oldies, my kids that were young are not anymore, the oldest is 21, and the youngest is 15!)  I do miss some of the people here!  I talk to Milton and Liam fairly regularly, and every once in a while we bird together. (PS-Liam, there are some photos you missed in my album, DUDE.)

Yep! I had been a member before the crash mostly needing help with ids from horrible photographs. I miss @psweet and all the others listed plus a few others like Mike Mars. I miss getting good id help with things other than birds. Insects especially, psweet was awesome help there. @Liam I'm glad you are back I remember you as a young birder before the crash with excellent id skills and if memory serves you are color blind making your id skills that much more amazing. I do have to say though that even though I do miss some of the old members I am growing pretty attached to the new as well.  @Kevinthanks for sharing the link. Certainly brought back memories. If not for the old Whatbird.com I never would have chased my first rarity. I thought having a 100 birds in Colorado was excellent...In others words I learned so much from the old but I continue to learn from the new.

Yep, they grow up so fast. He was one of those young birders and is now a grown person. Your memory is correct, he is colorblind. We make a decent birding pair. He birds a lot by ear (which I am TERRIBLE at), and I notice stuff more visually, which is great until I get tired later in the day and start seeing things that aren't right, lol. On New Year's Day we got over 100 species together. It was fun being numbers 1 and 2 on the state list for a few days.

I'm JimB not Jimbob. Yeah, I've been here since before the "crash" but haven't been that active here lately. Now that I'm retired I've been getting out more and will probably be stopping by more often.

Also recently retired though not being retired isn't why I wandered away. Not really sure why I wandered away. Multiple things I guess and wandered before the crash. Came back to learn of the crash and wandered again. I'm back now though.
