PaulK
Three questions: Is there anything misleading in this photo, specifically habitat or colour? Is this photo sourced from outside the Macaulay Library? Am I the only one having this much trouble figuring this one out?

Nope, the photo is pretty typical of the plumage and habitat type of this species. 2. The photo is in Macaulay Library (so I'm just trusting no one cheats!) 3. I have received mixed guesses of three species, so definitely not!

I was looking at photos trying to figure out plumage and came to the end of my search, which I figured was a conclusive no but wanted to confirm. I would have bowed out if I'd found the original.

This species is superficially similar to Zone-tailed Hawk, there are some differences in the tail pattern and the wings are broader. This photo was taken in Maricopa County, Arizona on May 17th. Those who guessed Common Black Hawk get 3 points. Anyone who guessed any species in the family Accipitridae gets 1 point. 1 additional point is awarded to those who guessed adult. Sex cannot be determined from this photo. Here's the 10/22/21 scoreboard. _________________________________ 1. BirdingBoy - 30 points 2. Kevin - 29 points 3. TheBirdNuts - 27 points 4. Liam
Thank you for your submissions!! This week's bird is a Cassin's Sparrow! This species is very similar to its congeners Bachman's Sparrow and Botteri's Sparrow. To differentiate from Bachman's Sparrow, note the brown crown showing no rufous coloration and the upperpart coloration being more brown than chestnut. Habitat is helpful too - the tree is a locust species, which does not occur in Bachman's Sparrow habitat. To differentiate from Botteri's, note the brown tertials (black in Botteri's) and the more scalloped appearance of the coverts (more striped in Botteri's). This photo was taken in Lubbock, Texas on June 14th. Those who guessed Cassin's Sparrow get 3 points. Anyone who guessed any species within the genus Peucaea gets 2 points and anyone who guessed any species in the family Passerellidae gets 1 point. Sex cannot be determined from this photo and I will not venture a guess on age. Here's the 10/29/21 scoreboard. _________________________________ 1. BirdingBoy, Kevin - 32 points 2. Quiscalus quiscula
I was mainly going off of the flank streaking for the Cassin's. And I am really, really hoping that this is not a hybrid for the titmouse.
