Liam's Weekly Quiz!

Thank you for your submissions!!

This week's bird is a juvenile Horned Lark. This one is challenging because the bird is young and hasn't yet molted in the plumage features we associate with the species. Many folks guessed Sprague's Pipit, which is very similar in appearance. However, notice how different the bill shape is. Compare our quiz bird to a juvenile Sprague's. The bill is much slimmer on the Sprague's and there's more well-demarcated white edges to the coverts. Juvenile Horned Lark also have white speckling on the back, which is vaguely visible in our bird. Interestingly, Whatbird has a photo of a mislabeled juvenile Horned Lark on the Sprague's Pipit page.

This photo was taken in Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico in August by user @meghann.

Those who guessed Horned Lark get 3 points. It's pretty much monotypic in both genus and family in the USA (aside from the introduced Skylark, which no-one guessed).

1 additional point was awarded for guessing juvenile/imm. Sex cannot be determined.

Here's the 11/19/21 scoreboard.

I just wanted to say - thanks to everyone for your continued interest and involvement in this quiz! It really is fun with so many folks playing. Sorry I have been inconsistent these last two weeks - life gets busy this time of year for just about everyone. I have a bunch of CBCs coming up and I'm helping my girlfriend move to Crockett for her new job, so my activity may be reduced. I'll still try to keep up with the quiz, but it will be less consistent than in the past. Surely after the new year things will get back to normal.

Thank you for all you do for this! If it would be helpful to set up alternate hosts for the quiz for the weeks you'll be busiest I'm sure a few of us would be happy to step in!

That's not a bad idea! Folks just need a reminder on who to send their submissions to.

Can somebody try to explain how I get western meadowlark here? I’m very confused.

I can see it. More elongated than a sparrow, eyeline, habitat, general coloration. Beak is all wrong but stance etc. could point in that direction.

When I first saw it in the field, I thought it was a meadowlark, until I got it in the bins. The stance and size seemed to be similar. Once I got the bins on it, I knew it wasn't.

Funnily enough, when I got it, I had been hoping it was a Sprague's, but it was not to be. . . .(and if I'd looked at ebird, I would have realized Sprague's have never been reported that far north in New Mexico that time of year.)

This week's quiz is the first to include 3 photos! But the good news is they're easy to guess to genus so users are almost guaranteed at least two points.

The photos are clearly and conveniently labelled as 1, 2, and 3. Please follow this labelling convention with your guesses.
