Liam's Weekly Quiz!

Thank you for your submissions!!

This week's birds are 1.) Carolina Chickadee, 2.) Black-capped Chickadee, and 3.) Sichuan Tit. The third one I added for tits and giggles so I won't run an analysis on that one, but Carolina and Black-capped Chickadee are best differentiated by the amount of white edging on the tertials, with Black-capped having much more. Hybrids exist, but I've never tried to differentiate them.

Photo 1 was taken in Bell County, Texas. Photo 2 was taken in Maine by my buddy Fyn Kynd.

Those who guessed Carolina Chickadee for one get 3 points, those who guessed Black-capped Chickadee for two get 3 points, and no points are awarded for three, since no one got it right anyway.

Sex and age are not discernable so no additional points for those, sorry.

Here is the FINAL SCOREBOARD of 2021. I think I owe some folks extra points from an error I made last week that I forgot to correct.

What is a clout point again?

Basically the winners of the monthly scoreboard get points separate from the original scoreboard. You can accumulate clout points by scoring high on the monthly scoreboard each month.

Poll time!

Do you find the scoreboards useful, motivating, or entertaining? Do any of you see it as a barrier to participating? What, if anything, do you get out of the scoreboard?

The reason I ask is twofold.

Firstly, it's taxing for me to update weekly and monthly and is the primary reason I am so delayed lately. If it was just the detailed ID analysis, it wouldn't be so time-consuming. I could instead do just percentages of correct vs. incorrect answers or something instead of a scoreboard; that way it would still be entertaining.

Secondly, I feel like the scoreboard can be intimidating to folks who are still learning ID versus the well-seasoned veterans. The latter will always end up high on the scoreboard so the newer folks might be embarrassed at the bottom.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts. I am open to continuing with the system we have now. So please, be honest! I'm asking for your honest opinion here, not asking permission to close the scoreboard. If we opt to keep the scoreboard, we can multiple users run the quiz. Either way, I want to select the option that will make this quiz the highest quality and most fun it can be.

Personally I think it's cute to have the scoreboard but very unnecessary. I didn't start guessing immediately because I missed at least the first couple and felt too far behind, but then got over it quickly enough.

I expect the most time consuming piece of this is recording the points each week in your scoreboard, but I'm wondering if a compromise could be posting the file each week (e.g. as a link to a Google sheet) rather than having to do the listing and formatting? Making that a bit more open source would also make it easier to share the task if you wanted to go that route.

I completely agree with @PaulK if it’s very hard for you to do that, please don’t waste your time for something nice, but unnecessary. I agreed that the learning of these difficult ( and wonderful ) IDs that you post is rewarding enough for us.

I'm sure the rivalry adds motivation and fun to the whole thing but I never make it to the top anyway mostly for lack of time and/or effort.  And no , it doesn't bother me to have my name posted on the bottom - I'm happy to give others someone to beat :classic_cool:  Probably the most interesting/useful thing for me would be to see what everyone's guesses were right or wrong but that's probably an even bigger pain.

The data nerd in me is very tempted to say "Pick me! Pick me!" My brain even already carne up with a color coded system.

I'm competitive to a fault, so I would like to see it keep going, but maybe on an optional basis? Like, people who want to compete could message their answers to me, and you just post the quiz and then the answer at the end of the week, leaving you out of the message part entirely? Just thinking out loud.

@Liam since we seem to have mixed answers, how about just a monthly scoreboard? That way we can see our results but you don’t have to do it every time.

I'm more or less there too. I like the scoreboard, but it isn't necessary if it takes up too much of your time. So I could live without it.

Same here.. I enjoy trying to figure it out week to week but don't "need" the points to enjoy it.

Thanks for your responses! I like the idea of having a google sheets document that updates the scoreboard. Inputting numbers into the spreadsheet is easy. The difficult part is transcribing that onto the Whatbird message box. So the easiest solution here would be to simplify the process.

Google sheet would also enable multiple users to oversee the quiz, so if I'm absent for any reason then another user could help out easily.
