This woodburning isn't really bird themed (bonus points for finding the birds 😄) but most of them that I've done have been and this the only one I have pictures of on my phone. I start with other people's drawings - coloring pages I have reproduction/derivative permissions for, etc. I will often pull elements from as many as a half dozen different scenes into one and then fill in additional details myself. I also often integrate a spot for a photo like this one. Some of my beach sunset shots, etc.

Just finished this colored pencil piece.  Probably the longest I've ever spent on a drawing.

I'm waiting to see your work in the next field guide

Thanks so much, guys.  I hadn't done a larger colored pencil drawing like this in 8 years.  It was fun, but I've got the opposite of warbler neck now...artist's neck!

Maybe you should go look for some warblers, might even it out.

It really is a great photograph  drawing! 👍

Wow, I love it!  Very cool texture.

Thank you. I used Strathmore Acrylic Paper Linen Finish. I don't remember using it before, but it worked well and stood up to moisture just fine.

@The Bird Nuts, do you think I should put any sort of clear finish over it?

Since it's acrylics, I don't think it's necessary.  If you feel like it needs it, I would test on a scrap piece to know how the paper would react.  I know artists do it all the time, but I've tried varnishing artwork on paper and they didn't turn out well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If I were you I would go over the pencil signature with a waterproof pen.

Thanks. I appreciate the input. The signature is actually a gray felt tipped pen; I'm not sure if it's waterproof. But I don't like the signature anyway. I think I'm going to paint over it and move it to the other side, and make it smaller. Artists can be so picky LOL.

Another non bird one. A friend of mine just sent this picture to me. I made this for him once when I was visiting his house on Lake Joseph, Ontario. It one of the few that I just freehanded entirely from scratch. Didn't even have any of my tools with me so I sacrificed one of his soldering tips for the job 🙂

Here's a Red-winged Blackbird displaying on a cattail.  Feel free to print it out and color it!

Here's another one: a Black-crowned Night Heron.  For a while, this was my nemesis bird.  It took me a while to get even a bad photograph of one.  Then, last month, one was just chilling at a neighborhood park.

These are so cool.  I love how the lines are loose and not uniform.  Are you going to make that coloring book?

I'm intrigued by the idea, but for now it's just a hobby. I'm trying to figure out whether things method of tracing photos makes a good coloring experience. Also, I think I'd want some sort of bird facts or stories to accompany the pictures. Or, if others are interested, perhaps we could think about a community art book! I tried coloring the Heron, and I think it looks pretty good. I've attached it to this message.
