Can I please ask why this isn't a thick-billed? I don't have experience with that ssp but that looks better to me than slate-coloured.

The bill isn't thick enough, as hard as it is to believe!

Here's a few examples from over the summer.

I think I also recall hearing that southern birds have even bigger bills than these northern birds.

Thanks @Aidan B!

Having looked at way too many photos of fox sparrows I'm now wondering why this isn't just one of our confusing dark sports, as I still can't get a slate-coloured from this. I'm glad I didn't see this one or it would be driving me nuts!

bump for the RBSA and audios.

I don’t think the photos are sufficient to completely rule out the possibility of the sapsucker being a hybrid. We can’t see the breast.

That being said, I would definitely call it Red-breasted Sapsucker. Nothing in the photos suggests hybridization. Based on the information we have it seems like a pure Red-breasted, so that is what I would call it

The first audio is definitely a Rail's alarm call, I've heard that call before at my patch when a otter or something similar is in the reeds. I've always thought that it's Sora making that call.

For that second audio, is it that song that comes in around 23 second that kind of sounds like a Black-chinned Sparrow? Probably a Bewick's Wren missing the first part of the song. I've heard similar things from them before.

So Sora for #1? Also yes the Black-chinned thing was what I was talking about.
