And I thought I talked too much in my checklists

No clue. This is simply to much documentation and noise for a checklist, in my opinion.

I personally like to include a decent amount of information in my checklists(see examples below), but I agree, the checklist with the Slaty-backed is way too much information, and it’s multiple paragraphs for multiple species. Most of the species with the long details aren’t even rare, I believe. If they’re adding info because it was a high count, it really should be no more then 3-4 sentences long.

These checklists are great! Lots of info, but not to much.

Whoops, meant to link this one. I accidentally linked the same checklist twice. Here’s the one the second list should’ve been.

If I had to guess:

FRS—-First reported sighting

FHC—-Final High Count

NFHC——Not final high count (he’s still reviewing photos so the number could go up)

And I thought I talked too much in my checklists 😳. Also, since when can you add photos to your checklist comments?

Thanks those make sense.  Looks like you can use html code to add pics to checklist comments.  Very similar to the way you used to have to do it before upload direct to eBird.

Ah, I assume eBird probably doesn’t want people to do that, but I can see its potential to be useful in some circumstances.

Yeah, I’ve always liked including info and appreciate other peoples checklists that include comments. At minimum I always do the weather and my route as I feel that’s important as that could affect the amount/types of birds that were reported.
Most of the time I wonder who I’m talking to, as does anyone really care that the ravens were flying SW, but (I’ve probably mentioned this before) I have had several instances where people mention me in their checklist comments responding to things I’ve said in my comments. Once I had a “Inspired by Aaron’s checklist I too walked around blah blah and was able to see my first ever blah blah Thanks Aaron!”. So adding comments is good as in some instances it can be helpful, even for non-rare birds.
But yeah, short and sweet is definitely better.

Though, I am a serial offender of creating multi-paragraph checklist comments every time I leave my cabin. I write a trip report on my last checklist because I guess I like talking to my future self?
This is probably my worst offence: https://ebird.org/checklist/S110863580

That being said, your checklist is YOUR checklist so put whatever you want on it. It’s nice that that guy spent the time and effort to write out a thorough explanation of his thought process and reasonings—even though most people are not gonna read all of it 😂

Mine are usually relatively short but usually include a route description and often any other notes of interest about the day such as who in the family was along with me or what else I saw of note mammal wise etc. I like to have such things simply for my own memories just like I would do in a field notebook even if they don't directly pertain to birds.

It's great entertainment, of a sort, so I've browsed through a few more of their checklists. I think fhc is likely correct as the dates are usually several days after the trip, but FRS can't be as the bird had been around at least a couple of weeks. Here's another good list, including a workaround for the 10 photo limit. https://ebird.org/checklist/S125144515

Ok this one takes the cake. There's a lesson in the dangers of false precision here. https://ebird.org/checklist/S123507093

Ah, the acronyms may be part of a one-sided argument with the reviewer. I think FHC is flagged high count, and FRS is flagged rare species. https://ebird.org/checklist/S106534283

These checklists kinda make me cringe…

Same. These are absurd.

Saying WAY too much while actually saying very little, if anything, at all.

And this is just plain rude (from one of the checklist comments)…

“You need to act on these checklists. What happened? Did someone go ahead and die without closing out their eBird reviewer status first?”

So glad this observer doesn’t live in my county.

Check this one out! Why add photos of the birds in the checklist comments?

https://ebird.org/checklist/S125833224

Documentation for the photos they used to support ID of the Slaty-backed Gull.  I think in the species comments might be a bit more appropriate though.

Putting rude comments aside, I think the checklists hearken back to days of intensive Field Notes, prior to having weather data history at click of a mouse.  May be an old-schooler birder/Ornithologist.    They may be doing this in lieu of a blog considering all the comments related to biking....or the stereotypes of cyclist applies in this case.

Links to Macaulay media in the species comments would be more appropriate than putting screenshot photos in the overall checklist comments.

😁I didn't even notice they are Flickr pics.  Yes, linked to Macaulay or html code of the images would work better.

Ty -around an hour away from me.  I've had my eye on the spot for a while, as a lifer Tropical Kingbird is there all winter.  I've got family plans through Monday.  I'll chase both birds soon.

Best of luck!

Why even use acronyms (that aren’t widely known) in the first place if you’re gonna follow them with an entire short story anyways? Like there’s no time to type out FRS in full, but there’s time and space to explain each feather in detail?

Idk, some people take it way too seriously I guess. To each their own.
