Dan P
Taken on 10-19-2021 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale, CA. I have only seen American Goldfinches a couple of times and I'm not very good at identifying them. I know the lighting and colors are not so good in this photo, but does this look like an American or a Lesser?
Aidan B
Man! This one is tough! Those colors are hard to judge! The structure of the body and my overall impression make me think it is a Lesser Goldfinch however. The wingbars also seem better for Lesser than American. Not sure what's going on with the white undertail coverts though. Edited October 23, 2021 by Aidan B
Charlie Spencer
White undertail looks good for American to me. Also, I've seen AMGOs with varying widths of wing bars.
Hasan
Lesser IMO
The Bird Nuts
Lesser. Shape (peaked head, more curved bill), wingbars, and color is good. The undertail coverts are more yellow than the undertail.
Connor Cochrane
I agree, this looks like a Lesser.
