PaulK
Hi, today on an ocean inlet in Vancouver BC. I'm pretty sure the first bird is a Common Loon with the white around the eye and what looks like a notch on the throat, but it has a lot of white on it and the fold in the throat looks like a chinstrap so confirming. Second bird was very far away and flying in the wrong direction: it didn't feel like a Cormorant to me so wondering if there's any way of getting a sense for what type (family) of bird it is. Thank you.
simonthetanner
For the loon I'd say Common, as in addition to the jagged collar and white eye the bird also has a very thick, heavy bill. A Pacific would have a thinner bill. 3
Connor Cochrane
Agreed, first bird is a Common. I think the second is a cormorant. 6

meghann
Yeah, I'd call that last one a Cormorant if I saw that in the field. The overall impression is right. 1
