IKLland
Hi all, I was birding today and looked up and saw what I assumed to be a RTHA. I took a quick pic and moved on. Reviewing the image after seeing it again, I realized that it wasn’t. It might be a juvenile BWHA. Now, I think it could be a swainson’s. Please help. This is my only photo. thanks. seen today, Orange County, Ca. just tagging some CA birders. @DLecy @Connor Cochrane @AlexHenry @Aidan B
Connor Cochrane
Unfortunately it’s just a juvenile Red-tailed. 8

DLecy
BWHAs don't have dark patagial markings, among other things. 4

Brown throat, black patagial patches, lots of thin streaking vs speckling, tail pattern, overall coloration is too dark, and GISS. 1

In addition to the above, five emarginated primaries and bulging secondaries. If the funny-looking bellyband was throwing you off, I'll add that Red-tailed bellybands are extremely variable. 4

Quiscalus quiscula
Yeah, it's a weird looking red-tailed (at least to me from the east), but this looks nothing like the BWHAs I see.
