Gull near Tampa, Florida

Recommended Posts

I saw this on Nov 25, 2021 a little bit south of Tampa, FL. The bird is lit by the direct early morning sun. I'm guessing it's either a first-year Herring or Lesser Black-backed Gull, but can't decide between the two. I'd appreciate guidance on how you may have determined which species is in the photo. Thanks!

Looks like a Lesser Black-backed Gull to me. I’m not sure though. Hopefully others can chime in.

Did you happen to see it next to any other gulls to get an idea of size (I.e., was it smaller than a Herring Gull?)

It was larger than the surrounding Laughing Gulls, but unfortunately it didn't allow a comparison with the other Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gulls I saw this morning.
