Red-tailed or Red-shouldered?

Recommended Posts

Thanks. I've been asking the same question for 6-7 years and I still can't get it right.

I'm beginning to think I have some color blindness. Between red and brown.

Am I at least right that it's young? I was looking for some orange on the breast but all I see is white.

Yep.   There's still some vertical streaking visible on the breast, and the eye is yellow.  The amount of red on the shoulder and breast varies with age AND subspecies.

Saw it as soon as I posted lol. Could not see an "edit" option. Is there one?

Haha I can't ID what I can't spell 😄

I fixed it for you. There is a an edit option in the three dots up at the right hand top corner of your post, but it is only available for 5 min. Don't ask me why, I didn't set it up, and I can't change it.

You actually can see the tail, which is long for a buteo and has dark bands that are wider than the light ones.  And the wing has rows of pale icicles.  Those also make it a red-shouldered.

I am somewhat color-blind, and there's no way I'd ever know that's reddish on the "shoulder".  Color-blindness tests are available on line.
