millipede
My mom was just asking me, on the phone, about how I might track birds(eBird) to find something... like how I might have gone looking for piping plovers several years ago to know when and where. She asked if there was anything like that in the winter... I had to have her clarify... basically, birds that are just there in the winter months that she might go look for. She'd like something near the ocean but, knowing her I would not recommend anything difficult to find. Ocean birds would be cool(in my opinion) but not necessarily easy for an inexperienced birder. If she's even a "birder." I'm going to look at eBird and am already thinking of sending her to plum island for a snowy owl... and maybe snow buntings? Is there anything else that might be passing through or hanging out AND be easy for a beginner to find/spot this time of year? She's in Middlesex county... I think anything from southern NH to say the gloucester area(if coastal) but not toooo far from where she is.
chipperatl
eBird bar charts? You can select up to 15 counties in a state, and then select individual months.
Charlie Spencer
I can never find this sucker when I want it. eBird, click the Explore tab, click the 'Target Species' link in the middle of the page Set Region to Mass or a county, and 'Time of Year' to December. Leave the other settings alone Click the 'Show Target Species' button in the middle of the page. The results will be ranked in descending order of frequency, so the most common birds ("easiest") will be at the top. Leave the other settings alone Belay that. Set 'For Your:' to 'United States' and 'Day List'. Because you'll likely be logged into eBird, leaving the defaults will filter out everything YOU have already seen. We want those included, since Mom likely hasn't seen anything yet. Be sure to search before you've entered any checklists for the region that day, or those birds will be filtered out. What the deuce am I doing up at this hour? I'm cruising on about three hours of sleep, so I expect to be even less productive at work than my usual low standard. As Grandpa would have said, I'm rougher than a corn cob.

Corn cobs and out houses, those were rough times. Hopefully you only know of the stories about them and don't have any first hand experience in measuring a corn cob's roughness.

Don't you hate it when someone has torn the last page out of the Sears' catalog and you have only the emergency backup option? , usually in that order.
