buntingboy
Today, upstate South Carolina. The bills look hooded. The sleeping one was darker and was NOT a male hooded. i could not get a picture awake.
buntingboy
Or potentially redbreasted?
Birding Boy
Red-Breasted Mergansers. Note the wispy reddish crest, lack of a white chin patch (Differentiates them from Commons) and the thin red bill.
Charlie Spencer
Definitely not Hooded. The bills are way too long, as are the bodies. Adult male Hooded are in full colors now and don't resemble the sleeping bird at all. I think Common but wait for better opinions. EDIT: Sniped by those better opinions I mentioned. I couldn't remember which species has the sparse crest vs. a shaggy one. Edited December 5, 2021 by Charlie Spencer
