SoCal trip December 2021

Small change of plans, I'm leaving San Diego for tomorrow, (late night, need to get up really early). Instead, I'm heading east into the desert for some of those birds I've never been in the habitat to see. (Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Verdin, etc.)

Yeah, I'm staying at Bolsa Chica Campground.

Other good places include William R mason regional park(  American redstart and chestnut sided warbler currently). Irvine regional park, Huntington Central Park, Laguna niguel regional park, upper Newport bay. Crystal cove SP pelican point area for California gnatcatcher in the sage scrub.
My biggest suggestions are bolsa chica ecological reserve, William R mason( especially due to the rarity’s), and Huntington central park. Try some other rarity’s if you can, like that solitary sandpiper.

Been pretty good today! Got two lifers, (Verdin and Black-tailed Gnatcatcher) and six statebirds. It literally took me all day to find a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher. I finally found one when there was twenty minutes of daylight left. Had absolutely amazing looks at Costa's Hummingbirds and Vermillion Flycatchers, which was really nice!

Thanks! I've been checking the listserve all day, there's been some nice rarities lately. I'll have to see how much I bird inside orange county, I'll definitely try for the Mexican duck, and will for sure visit Bolsa Chica because I'm staying there. Lots of good rarities in San Diego for some reason. ?‍♂️

Nice! Are you gonna try for that grace’s warbler in San Diego? I’m trying for it when I get back. If so, let me know how easy it was.

I will be, I'm starting the morning with the Greater Pewee, than probably will try for the Eastern Phoebe and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and probably the Black-throated Green Warbler, than I will chase the other rarities from there.

Pretty good day today, though the birds weren't really cooperating (Six of the eight birds I chased didn't show). However, I did succeed in chasing a Black-throated Green Warbler and a Magnolia Warbler! Besides from those, I also got three other lifers (Red-masked Parakeet, Royal Tern, and Little Blue Heron). I also found several rarities, though they weren't really that rare. (Nashville Warbler and two Hermit Warblers). Also got a pair of Black Skimmers, which I had seen previously in California but didn't have on ebird, so I added one additional species to my state list. Overall, it was definitely a pretty good day even without the rarities cooperating.

See you missed the grace’s. What was the place for that like? Hard to tell when the hotspot just says stakeout graces warbler.

Basically, it's a row of houses on a steep hill with lots of big pines around. The Grace's Warbler apparently likes to hang out around the blue and white house (the house is very easy to find). I really didn't give the bird much time to show, I was there late in the evening and the street was fairly quiet.

Aha, thanks. I saw the comments on the blue and White House but wasn’t exactly sure what that meant.  I’m definitely trying for it this weekend.

Today went really well! I got six lifers, and nine state birds. The birds were being much more cooperative than yesterday, only one of the birds I chased didn't show. (I missed it by only a few minutes, wish I had stayed longer). I also saw another Black-throated Green Warbler, this one was much more cooperative. Best bird of the day was probably either a Painted Redstart or a Tricolored Heron. Lucy's Warbler was nice too.
