I'm pretty sure the blob of yellow on the wing's leading edge is diagnostic, along with the strong eye ring.

I gotta (get to someplace where I can) get me one of these.

Stupid question... what does "diagnostic" mean?

It means that mark makes the identification certain, or practically certain.  It's the same meaning as in "An A1C value of greater than 6.5 percent on two separate occasions is diagnostic for diabetes" (from here).

The mountainous pine forests of the West have gotta be one of my favorite birding environments... Solitaires, Mountain Bluebirds, Mountain Chickadees, Cassin's Finches, Great Gray Owls, Pygmy Nuthatches, tons of cool woodpeckers... The list goes on!

I've been there a few times in my life, but all before I started birding.  I'll get back there after I retire in a couple of years.
