nathannlynch
Okay another one for you all after the great help I got with that sparrow ... When: Sunday, Jan 16, 2 PM Where: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY. Forested area with thick brush below, near the lake. What: Smallish hawk sat high in the tree for about 10 minutes (harassed by a couple nearby blue jays) before making a short flight to another nearby perch. Thanks for your help - excited for a potential lifer! Edited January 16 by nathannlynch Adding details
Charlie Spencer
It's darker than the ones we have in the southeast but it looks good!
The Bird Nuts
Not a Red-shouldered with those broad white tail bands, solid brown flight feathers, and darker brown breast. This is a very late/early Broad-winged Hawk.
nathannlynch
Thanks @Charlie Spencer! Definitely dark on the head but also a cloudy day. Was fun to watch. Much appreciate the insight!
nathannlynch
@The Bird Nuts oh thanks for jumping in! That was the other option that came up when I ran it through Merlin. I will say I'm no good at color correction so I'm just dealing with whatever the camera gave me - couldn't say through the binoculars. Excited either way! I appreciate you taking a look. It's great that you got a shot of the tail and wing patterns. Those are more helpful than color here. Avery
If you can, I would report that bird! New York does not have any records of BWHA from December to February! @nathannlynch Edited January 17 by Avery

This is a very late/early Broad-winged Hawk. Great call. I noticed the secondaries weren’t checkered, but thought maybe it was the angle. This is a crazy bird for this time of the year.
