I’m at 63 with the most recent being Hoary redpoll, I’m pretty behind.

There is no 'behind'.  We don't all have the same amount of time to get out, or the same number of species available to us.  You see the birds you see in your area, in the time you have available.

Oh yeah, I totally agree. I was mostly comparing my list this year to mine of last year, I think I had 80 something species by this time last year. I know I don’t have a chance against all these Californians with their insanely diverse counties ? I’ll probably start getting more sp soon however, just got my drivers license, next step is getting my parents permission to drive to some spots on Lake Erie.

Trying asking for spots AROUND Lake Erie.  I don't think you'll get permission to drive ON the lake.  :classic_biggrin:

I don't know why my Darling Bride says I'm not helpful ...

Does it count as a pelagic if a drive across a large frozen lake? Might be able to do that if the single digit weather continues.

I guess its time for me to report my year list then.. I had a pretty below-average start to the year, I'm only at 189 species, pretty far behind my pace last year. Still haven't made a trip out to the ocean even though I only live 20 minutes away, so I'm missing a lot of seabirds. Haven't seen too many exiting things so far, but I guess the continuing 60 Trumpeter Swan (Pretty much a state high count) was pretty cool.

Only 189?

Very impressive. That would be a decent number in my county - for the entire year!

What is your year list so far?

What do you expect your year list to be like by the end of the month?

What was your favorite bird so far?

112--best January, yet

now nearing the end of the month, so maybe low 120s

Vermillion Flycatcher

I just took a look at your county because I have always found winter birding pretty good. For certain it is here in Florida but it was good when I lived in Colorado too. That said your county does not seem to have much reported for the year yet. I'm not sure if this is due to lack of birds to see or if there are just too few birders out looking. You may be in a unique position to be the person who really develops your area in ebird. I don't know if you have noticed but you can help create birding hotspots. Keep your eyes out for parks, trails...that might be birdie. Bird them a few times and then suggest them as hotspots. You may find as you explore and expand your horizons that birding in the winter in your area is better than you think. Most of the birders here on what bird have the benefit of following in the foot steps of others and utilizing ebird information. You may have to make your own. Bundle up though I bet it is pretty cold where you are.

Thank you so much, @Clip! I think there is a combination of too few birds (that I know, anyway) and too few birders- most of them are drawn over to the neighboring county.

What he is trying to say is that if you got to a spot that looks like there would/could be a lot of birds, it might just be that it’s not on ebird yet. You could start the hotspot if there are a ton of birds.

Also, I bet that there is NOT too few birds. It’s only that there is too few birders to be able to know just how many species there are!

*she I think.

I understand about the hotspots, I've tried to suggest a spot as a hotspot several times before but it didn't get made one.

Hmmm, I don't know about there being not too few birds...some days when it's very cold I don't see any birds at all. But I agree, there aren't many birders at all.

There’s not birds anywhere in the northeast in winter. I meant in the spring/summer/fall there’s more birds than you think.

I’m at 120 now, with the latest being a peregrine Falcon. My goal for the end of the year is 250 for the year list, and to take my life list to 300.( it’s at 259 now!)

I'm still ahead then barely, after yesterday I have 121, (Great Black-backed Gull and Ash-throated Flycatcher two of the additions)for the year. Not that I want to start a competition. I do not have a year list goal. I actually see my husband and I doing less birding this year than last but taking more long trips within the State. My only goal really is to increase my Florida list but to do that it seems we are going to have do more south and west birding here in Florida. There are a few local birds I don't have yet but not many. Everything I need seems to be distant. My life list is ever so close to 500 (489) but I'm not holding my breath on getting there this year. It would nice if I did though. We do have a trip to the Dry Tortugas planned for early summer so maaaaybe. Knock on wood nothing happens to prevent the trip...

Im ending the month at 123 so far for the year, I think I did pretty well considering I didn’t get out of my town that much. Hopefully I can get to 150 by the end of February.

My latest was a Great horned owl calling from my house last night.

I'm at 58, and keeping pace with my county best from last year.  No lifers.  Have dipped on 2 geese I should have gone after sooner, Snow and Cackling.

I'm guessing I'll end January around my high of 63.  Depends on what I can find on the river tomorrow.

Favorite bird, probably the dark morph Rough-legged Hawk I saw last weekend.

Overall our county is 5 more birds in January than the best we had last year for the whole month, 85 to 80.  2 other birds have tired or exceeded my January best last year, but I think that happened last year also.

County blew away previous high with 87 species this month, including a first Wilson’s Snipe for Michigan this year (crazy bird for January).

I’ve recorded zero FOY birds since the 22nd, as have been dealing with a sick “puppy”.  She seems a little better now though.
