photog46
Can someone explain what is happening to the wings of what I believe is a female Common Eider? Is this some kind of molting or does the bird have a real problem? Southern Maine coast February 18. Thanks very much.
The Bird Nuts
Looks like it has a condition called Angel Wing, although I've never seen it in a truly wild bird like an eider. Maybe this eider had a previous injury and was fed by people which caused the Angel Wing?
photog46
Thanks for the information, sad as it is. This bird was out on the water and I don't imagine it had been in close contact with humans in its life, but who knows?
The Bird Nuts
Come to think of it, eiders probably wouldn't eat what people usually feed ducks, so something else must have caused it to have a nutritional deficiency.
