Shrike
Saw in the highlands near San Gerardo, Costa Rica last week.
Aaron
I wouldn’t expect such a white contrasting belly on a dark pewee. This looks better for a black Phoebe
Shrike
Thanks, I was just looking at my Field Guide for possibilities. Aren't phoebe's more squat? Here's the black Phoebe I saw...I guess it does have some white on it's belly!
Aaron
Well, a dark Pewee would also have orange on its bill, and that birds bill is entirely black. That together with the contrasting belly, really only leaves one other option (that I am aware of) which is a black phoebe. Black phoebe have a range in the Southern US so I'm sure some other member will come and confirm/deny black phoebe. Dark Pewees are only found in the highlands of Panama and Costa Rica, so it definitely would be a lot cooler if this was one, but I'm fairly certain it is not.

Confirmed. Unless there are extremely similar species down there that I’m not aware of. Edited February 26, 2022 by IKLland
Shrike
Thanks everyone. I was holding out hope, but have conceded it's a Black Phoebe!

Dark Pewee (capitalized as indicated in the OP's post) is the species in question, which are kind of similar at a distance to Black Phoebes, although they are much more often confused with similar Contopus flycatchers such as Eastern and Western Wood-Pewees, as well as Tropical Pewee. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/188389831
Aaron
Responding to this post is what finally made me realize that it was Pewee and not pEEwee. I honestly never noticed there was only one ‘e’
