dred
Seen today in covington louisiana. Summer would be the expected species right now
The Bird Nuts
It's a Scarlet Tanager with the smaller bill and black wings and tail. 5
meghann
Scarlet was my initial impression for the same reasons. 2

blackburnian
How is Western being ruled out?

Peromyscus
The bill looks orangy. Scarlet should have a grayer bill. Western females can have an orange bill.
Quiscalus quiscula
It does look kind of Western-y, I can see a hint of white wingbars, and there's that bill.
Caley Thomas 2.0
Looks like a female (or non-breeding / molting) Scarlet Tanager to me, noting the Merlin picture of the same has an orangey bill, brownish-hued but darker wings, and I'm not seeing white wingbar hints in these photos either, FWIW...(also, out of my league, but thought I'd throw my two cents in here just for fun cause it's Friday) Edited March 11, 2022 by Caley Thomas 2.0

While I don't agree with ruling out anything based solely on range, I do wonder if range is enough to lean strongly against Western in this case. I say that with just a quick reference to iBird's range maps, not using ebird's maps.

If there are better angles of the wing bars, we can easily tell.
Peromyscus
For what it's worth, eBird has about 13 records of Scarlet Tanager in March from Louisiana, none before the 27th. It has about 9 records of Western Tanager in March from the state, in all parts of the month; there are a lot of sites with February Louisiana Western Tanager records, and none with Scarlet.

WETA is more likely than Scarlet this time of year.
Aidan B
I'm having a very hard time seeing this as a Western Tanager, and I've seen more WETA than I can count. My votes on Scarlet.

My votes on Scarlet. I wouldn’t completely ID it without better views of of the wings, but I’m also feeling Scarlet here. Since I also have a ton of experience with western, I can tell you that if I saw this bird here, I’d give it a closer look. But, I’d still like to see additional photos.
dred
I'll have to look but I don't think it ever showed a good side view of the wings. It stayed high and well covered unfortunately. I never got the impression of wing bars through the binoculars, but never got a good look either.
dred
Anyone want to take a crack at this one. Same tree, worse light? Looks like an Baltimore oriole to me, but I don't know if there is enough info for a good id.
Quiscalus quiscula
Definitely Baltimore Oriole. 5
