I can go over 3 hours without issue, but I'm beginning to prefer to not do that if I can find an acceptable option. I recall why I haven't tried a pack. Other than a water bottle, I have a solution for everything else I want to carry - binos, camera, phone, car keys. There's nothing else I'd want to put in one.
DLecy
Tbh, it really depends on what type of birding I am doing. I will say that I ALWAYS make sure I have plenty of water with me as I got caught in the open prairie once with way too little water on a 7 mile loop hike in the summer with the heat spiking to like 96 degrees. It was super cold and overcast when I left early in the morning and I became dangerously dehydrated…but I did get my lifer Baird’s Sparrow! Typically, a large water bottle in the car is enough. If I’m hiking a good distance, I have a backpack and bring along a store bought 1 liter plastic water bottle that I reuse (saves a lot of weight and is a thru-hiker hack). If I am on a pelagic (10-12 hours), I use a backpack with bladder so I can jam into the cabin, take a few large sips, and head out as I want to spend as little time in the cabin as possible since there is usually someone sick in there. 1
aveschapinas
AHA So you northern birders are lightweights. I got it! I also usually don't have access to a mobile hydration/storage station, so I plan on carrying whatever I'm going to need.

chipperatl
Ya’ll Southerners can take this hot weather back during peak migration please. I may have take this thread seriously and start carrying water in the field. Starting the day this warm up here isn’’t any fun.

Usually still having to be somewhat bundled when you start the morning. Leaves have popped out near full within 5 days, making it harder and harder to see the birds now.

It's all just perspective though, to me anything under 55 is cold, so I'll just keep my nice warm weather.

Nighttime is cool or cold most of the year! This time of year it's warm at night; I only have 2 blankets on my bed, instead of the 5 or 6 I use when it's cold. (Cold being in the high 20s at night, sometimes a bit lower; record low is 19°F. But the houses are unheated.) When it rains things cool off too!

It was a full whopping 82 at the hottest.
