RobinHood
Southern Ontario today. Spotted while driving and managed to stop briefly at an intersection and grab some poor photos. Thanks.

RobinHood
Thanks @Jerry Friedman. I'd just seen a Kestrel seconds earlier, which disappeared, and just wanted to make sure.

I guess in this view of a Merlin we'd see the buff vent and undertail coverts. What else tells you it's a Peregrine? Sibley mentions that the Peregrine's wings are longer in proportion (to its body), but I can't recognize that.

Note the dark moustachial stripe as well.
meghann
Yeah, that face pattern has waaaaay too big of a dark mark for Merlin.

RobinHood
My initial thought was Peregrine because of the facial marking but it would be a first for the location and I've never seen one hunting over a field before (we have one in our harbour every winter). That's why I posted it.

PEFA inhabit a mind-boggling variety of landscapes and biomes, globally. 2
Hasan
Structurally this bird is way too bulky and barrel-chested for Merlin
