Well, I could be wrong. 🙂  I guess in this view of a Merlin we'd see the buff vent and undertail coverts.  What else tells you it's a Peregrine?  Sibley mentions that the Peregrine's wings are longer in proportion (to its body), but I can't recognize that.

Note the dark moustachial stripe as well.

My initial thought was Peregrine because of the facial marking but it would be a first for the location and I've never seen one hunting over a field before (we have one in our harbour every winter).

That's why I posted it.
