What bird name would like to change?

I don't know what I was expecting.  The ABA podcast was nuts for it.  I'm finding it a bit dry.  I'll read almost anything during lunch (including a 1400+ page history of SC that took a couple of years) but I'm can't say this is holding my interest.

I find it to be more of a reference book than a book to sit with and read. Something to consult when I have a question about this or that bird name, but I haven't been working my way through it by any means. Kind of like a field guide, I guess, except to the names.

I also want the American black duck to be changed to the American BROWN duck.

Would be a bit redundant considering all the other ducks in America that are brown, but that kind of thing hasn’t stopped them before!

I think every Duck should be named “Brown Duck”. That way we won’t  have to ID any of the females!

Yea. I’m reading a page or two every few days.

Boy, I’ve got a lot here:

  • Downy woodpecker- least woodpecker
  • Canada goose- American goose
  • red tailed hawk- rufous tailed hawk
  • reddish egret- rufous headed egret
  • yellow crowned night heron- white-crowned night heron
  • golden eagle- golden naped eagle
  • Mississippi kite- southeastern kite
  • (Please don’t hate me for this) bald eagle-white headed eagle
  • red shouldered hawk- rufous shouldered hawk (for the billionth time, rufous is NOT red!)

That makes me think, when we went to Europe, we met a guy who had visited here, and since it is the national bird, he wanted to see a Bald Eagle. So he found one, was all excited, until someone explained to him, that Bald Eagles aren't bald, and that he had seen a Vulture.

Unpopular opinion: Vultures are awesome! I enjoy seeing a TUVU more than a BAEA mainly because TUVUs are underrated, and BAEAs are overrated.  Just saying.

I think vultures are awesome, and BAEA are overrated, but I still enjoy seeing a BAEA more because i see vultures all the time.

On the gull identification trip I mentioned in the Birdie thread, we saw 2 Black and 0 Turkey Vultures, and 19 Bald Eagles of all ages, some of which flew over the flock of gulls on the water.

Yep! I see them out of the car window all the time, but seldom vultures, especially not in winter.

Cool! I usually see a Turkey Vulture every day, a Black Vulture at least once a week, and if I see ten BAEA in a year I am lucky. The more south you go the more vultures you see. I remember when my family drove up to NY to see our grandparents I only only saw 1 vulture.

Vultures become more common the further south you go. There's almost always a vulture in the sky where I live, and when you get down into the neotropics they become the most abundant birds in the area.

If it is two hours past sunrise, and there is not Vultures in the sky it is probably raining, or some other reason there is no good thermals. You can see easily 150 of Black and Turkey, at some locations, but just out and about, 10-12 of each is pretty normal to see.
