Costa Mesa, CA Small Bird

My buddy sent me the photo below and I can't find a good match for this bird.  Merlin gives me things that aren't close.  I'm traveling with no books, trying online.  Stumped.

That is a European Robin.

It is not a North American bird either, so it should go in identify a bird outside North America thread. @KevinIt also helps to give date and location if possible (Which when the photo is sent from a buddy, isn't easy, so its okay, I'm just saying)

 

Edit: Wait Whoops you put a location in the name. Where is your buddy at though? Some where in Europe?

Huh.  Never expected this to be a bird from off the continent.  This photo was taken this morning in his backyard in Costa Mesa, California which is really just part of Los Angeles.

NEVER MIND!  It turns out he got photos mixed up and this was in fact taken in France!  Nice ID and I'll never submit another bird for another person.  So sorry.

? I don't think there's a problem with submitting a bird for another person, as long as you and they are careful.
