You may be right but here when I am at Bay City State Park they do sometimes go in the water. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/362268991 This is the best example from my photos I can give you for now. I do have a photo of a Sanderling with water completely covering its legs up the belly. So at least Michigan Sanderlings might be different.
