sbruenjes
I saw this bird today at the Celery Farm in Bergen County, NJ. I only see ruby throated hummingbirds around here, but this one doesn't have the ruby throat... maybe its the lighting? Any help would be appreciated.
Peromyscus
It's the lighting. The bird is a Ruby-throated with a tail longer than the wings (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ruby-throated_Hummingbird/species-compare/66120141) 3
Charlie Spencer
The appearance of color on hummers' gorgets / throats is highly dependent on the angle at which light is reflective. The black you see is the actual color of the feathers. 1
