SoCal hummer on nest

Recommended Posts

Stumbled on this nest on the Sweetwater River Trail (San Diego NWR) east of San Diego on April 24.  I have a couple of other pictures, but they are all very similar to this one.

As I understand it, Anna's females often show a small-to-medium pinkish spot on their throats.  Some Costa's females show a small purple spot.  Of course, no help from color with this picture.   Can species be determined by the size of the spot (or some other means)?

Thanks in advance!

Ouch!

Little hummer was over a week old!

Plus, no one had posted in the ID forum for over 19 hours.  I hope it's only because the weather everywhere this week just wasn't encouraging for birding.

I was just sympathizing with your big bump. Aka a goose egg around here ?  Your first bump was more like a hummer egg.

The weather here was great - but my list was a grand total of 1 crow (heard only) I actually packed a ziplock of BOSS in hopes of getting a window room along the back of the hospital again and baiting something to within my view. Ended up getting a room that opens into a beautiful little courtyard with a waterfall in the center of the building but no birds seen there yet and didn't want to find out that BOSS was included in the big 'Don't feed the squirrels' signs.

I don't know about south of the border but a lot of Canada has been without internet, including interact, or cell service for most of the day. The service is still not 100% restored yet.

We haven't had that problem here (Sacramento), nor have I heard of it anywhere else. I haven't replied to this one because I didn't know the ID of the Hummer. Not even enough to make an uneducated guess. ☹️

I think Rogers is strictly a Canadian outfit.  No major outages this side of the border, eh?
