Strange white gull

Recommended Posts

Help me! Seen today, Orange County, Ca. Can’t tell if this is just molting/worn, or actually what I think it is. Thanks! I have real photos from my camera if needed later. Seen at the beach.

Heavily bleached gulls this year are often the most problematic to ID to species. That being said, I don’t really see any evidence of hybridization here. If this were a GWGU x WEGU or a GWGU x HERG, one would expected darker primaries or a bill that was splotchy, versus all black. Seems pretty good for a GWGU, but you could always put it down as Larus sp. to be safe.

Thanks guys. It’s been confirmed by my reviewers.

Nice find!  Lifer?

They’re here in the winter, but they’re pretty rare in summer, so thanks!

Not a lifer, as I’ve seen them this last winter. These were my first good photos, though.
