Dark eyes = Adult bird.  Any other shots?  That rufous bleeding down the the throat isn't what I'd expect a bird this time of year, and that far south to have.

Thanks for the insights.  Unfortunately no other shots of this one - it was seen at Pinckney Island next door to Hilton Head if that helps.

When do immature Red-shouldered molt into adult plumage?   Red-shouldereds are common in SC year round.

BoW says April to October.

This looks like might be same bird.  https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/478820361

Looking at other RTHA from South Carolina (Pinckney in particular https://media.ebird.org/catalog?taxonCode=rethaw&mediaType=photo&sort=rating_rank_desc&regionCode=L109523&view=grid) looks like that rufous bleeding down the neck isn't that rare there.  Very cool looking bird.

That may be but eBird is chock full of Red-shouldered sightings in coastal SC in the depths of the winter months.

I'm not saying this bird is a RSHA, only disputing when they would be found this here.

that was the molt timing, not when there are seen.
