dragon49
The only time I got busted by a reviewer was when I posted a Gray Catbird photo as if it were a Northern Mockingbird, so I want to be careful here. ? Merlin and iBird Photo Sleuth have a difference of opinion, so I'm stumped. Caley Thomas 2.0
NOMO (Northern Mockingbird). Note the white in the tail, the lack of a black crown, and the presence of faint whitish eye arcs on this bird. Charlie Spencer
When they fly, Northern Mockingbirds show wide white stripes running from front to back of the wing. Catbirds are rather secretive, preferring dense brush or understory. If it's out in the open on a wire or utility line, it's probably not a catbird. 3
dragon49
Bump, I should have posted whether it was a Northern Mockingbird or Gray Kingbird, as my wrongly submitted pic of a Northern Mockingbird was a Gray Kingbird. Thanks for the prompt replies as always.
dragon49
One more bump, as I don't like to come across as illogical. I had mentioned Gray Catbird in the original post, as Merlin incorrectly Identifies the bird as a Gray Catbird, however, the Ebird photo entry that I corrected was a Gray Kingbird that I had posted as a Northern Mockingbird. Edit - iBird Photo Sleuth correctly identifies the Northern Mockingbird. Edited September 9, 2022 by dragon49

Tougher discernment between NOMO and Gray Kingbird it would seem, although I've never seen a Gray Kingbird TBH. Looks like the white outer edges of the tail in a NOMO, and as Charlie said, white in the wings being very visible when they fly, should be perhaps the easiest way to differentiate the two species from one another. Hope this helps! 2
Charlie Spencer
Bill and tail are too long for Gray Kingbird. Problems at both ends! 2
